May: socially just climate action and energy transformation

“Now more than ever!" is the unrelenting message arriving from the Bonn Climate Change Conference held this May in Germany.

Resolved about the urgency of global climate warming, delegates at the World Conference Center in Bonn were set on keeping the spirit of the Paris Agreement alive and pushed further for progressive measures to lower global temperature under the two-degree Celsius benchmark set by the accord back in 2015.

Part of that is also a push away from fossil fuels and toward a global energy transformation, one that combines the ecological with an energy imperative to rebuild a fairer and socially just economy in the interest of workers and entire communities.

In 2010, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung established a new global working line on climate justice and social-ecological transformation, after promoting sustainable development models for many decades. Putting the work by FES on climate change and energy into this month’s spotlight, we bring stories and videos from activities by FES and partners in five continents: Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

“I did not start with renewable energy and end up with energy policy. Rather, I began by looking at the problems we face and our political responsibility toward them, and that led me to renewable energy,” Herman Scheer, a social democrat and pioneer of green energy supply was quoted once saying.
