When Debt-20 meets G-20
Together with partners from critically indebted countries, the Alliance for debt relief erlassjahr.de/Jubilee Germany, Bread for the World, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and WEED – World Economy, Ecology and Development will discuss possible solutions on how future debt crisis can be resolved in a quick and efficient manner.
At the event “Let’s talk: Debt20 meets G20”, representatives from the G20 and their respective institutions will come together with members from Debt20—twenty activists, researchers and politicians from indebted countries—and discuss how to prevent that the debt crisis endangers the achievement of the global Sustainable Development Goals.
Among the members of Debt20 are the Ecuadorian economist Alberto Acosta, Dr. Fanwell Bokosi, Director of the African Network on Debt and Development AFRODAD, and Oliver Joseph, the Minister for economic growth, trade and development for the Caribbean island Grenada. Together with experts from Honduras, Mozambique, Pakistan, Serbia, and Zimbabwe, the Debt20 members will share their different perspectives and experiences.
Joining the dialogue on the side of G20, there will be Johannes Wolff, team leader of G20-Priorities, Dr. Elke Baumann, Head of Department for Debt Conversion / Parisian Club (both from the Federal Ministry of Finance) as well as Mark Flanagan (International Monetary Fund) and Elena Flores (European Commission) will be.
Kristina Rehbein, political advisor of Jubilee Germany called on G20 to live up to their self-declared commitments: “The G20 has ascribed itself a central role in providing and securing stable global finance systems. To this end, they will need to ask themselves how they want to handle future debt crisis.”
